Getting to Kea

Getting to Kea — Ferries from Lavrio

Kea is accessible only by ferry. The port of departure is Lavrio, on the southeastern tip of the Attic peninsula, approximately 65 km from central Athens. The crossing takes around one hour.

The Ferry

Ferries to Kea (arriving at Korissia port) are operated by several companies — including Triton Ferries, Goutos Lines, and SeaJets depending on the season. Schedules vary significantly throughout the year: in winter (November–April) there are typically one or two departures per day; in summer the number rises to six or seven daily sailings, particularly on Fridays and Sundays when Athenians travel for the weekend.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the Lavrio port ticket offices. Pre-booking is strongly recommended for vehicles in July and August, when ferry capacity on popular departures is regularly exceeded.

Getting to Lavrio from Athens

Lavrio is approximately 65 km south of central Athens. By car or taxi, allow 50–70 minutes depending on traffic on the Athens ring road and the coastal road through Saronida toward Sounio. A KTEL bus departs several times daily from the Pedion tou Areos terminal in Athens; journey time is roughly 90 minutes. If you have an early morning ferry, consider arriving in the Lavrio area the night before.

From Other Islands

Seasonal ferry connections link Kea to Kythnos and occasionally Syros, enabling island-hopping circuits. Frequency increases significantly in summer. Check current timetables as these connections change by season.

Practical Tips

  • Pre-book vehicle tickets for July and August — popular sailings sell out
  • Check openseas.gr or the ferry operators’ websites for current timetables
  • Lavrio port has a small café and basic facilities — allow 30 minutes before departure
  • The last ferry back from Kea to Lavrio is typically early evening in winter; check if day-tripping in low season
  • Flying from the UK or Germany to Athens takes 3–4 hours — Kea is then under 2 hours further
