Best Time to Visit Kea — Seasons and Weather Guide
Kea operates as a year-round community thanks to its proximity to Athens. Each season offers something different — from wildflower hiking in April to lively beach days in August and golden, uncrowded autumn afternoons in October.
Spring — April to June
Late spring is arguably the finest time to visit Kea. Temperatures are warm but comfortable (20–26°C), the sea is approaching swimmable by June, and the island’s hillsides are green after winter rains. Hiking trails are at their best — cool enough to walk in the middle of the day, with wildflowers growing along the ancient paths. Crowds are minimal, accommodation is available at lower prices, and the atmosphere is local rather than resort-mode.
Summer — July and August
July and August are the busiest months, particularly on weekends when Athenians arrive in volume. Temperatures regularly exceed 30°C and the meltemi (northerly summer wind) is at its strongest — affecting sailing conditions and making some exposed beaches less comfortable. Popular beaches fill up, restaurants and bars operate at full capacity, and the island has real energy. Everything is open and well-run; book accommodation and ferry tickets well in advance.
Early Autumn — September and October
September is the sweet spot for many experienced visitors. The sea is at its warmest (23–24°C after a full summer of heating), crowds have thinned, and the light has the extraordinary quality of Aegean autumn. Hiking becomes comfortable again, restaurants remain open, and prices moderate. October brings cooler temperatures and the first rains; most beach-facing businesses close by late October.
Winter — November to March
The island functions in winter but at greatly reduced intensity. Most beach tavernas and seasonal restaurants are closed. Ioulida, Korissia, and Vourkari remain open with cafés, supermarkets, and a handful of year-round tavernas. Walkers who want the trails to themselves find Kea rewarding — temperatures often reach 15–18°C. Ferry services are reduced (typically one or two daily) and should be checked in advance.
