Pisses Beach — A Peaceful Western Retreat
Pisses is a sandy beach on the western coast, nestled at the foot of a green valley between two hill ranges. The small settlement beside it has tavernas and the archaeological remains of ancient Poiessa — one of Kea’s four ancient city-states — directly adjacent.
The Beach and Setting
The beach at Pisses is a pleasant arc of golden-brown sand with calm, clear water. It is partly organised, with sunbeds and umbrellas available along the main stretch. The valley setting means the beach is often sheltered from the summer meltemi wind — a practical advantage on breezy August days when other beaches become exposed.
The small village of Pisses beside the beach has a genuine lived-in quality. A campsite has operated nearby (check current status before visiting), and the area is popular with visitors looking for a quieter, more local experience than the resort atmosphere of Koundouros.
Ancient Poiessa
The ruins of Poiessa, one of the four ancient city-states of Kea, are visible on the hillside directly above the Pisses settlement. Dating to the 6th century BC, the site includes traces of the ancient urban layout and was active through to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It is freely accessible and makes an interesting half-hour walk before or after the beach. For more context, the island’s archaeological sites are well worth exploring.
Getting There
The road from Ioulida to Pisses takes 25–30 minutes by car. The village is on the western coast and the road passes through the island’s interior. There is parking near the beach.
