Xyla Beach — Wild and Close to the Port
Xyla is a paradox: one of the most beautiful beaches on Kea, yet only about 15 minutes’ drive from Korissia port. The catch is an unpaved access road that keeps the crowds away — and the beach entirely unspoiled.
The Beach
Xyla is a sand-and-pebble beach washed by very clear water. The mix of fine sand and white pebbles is unusual and attractive, and the surrounding terrain is quintessential dry Cycladic scrubland — low hills, wild herbs, and silence. There are no facilities here at all: no beach bar, no sunbeds, no taverna. Bring everything you need.
The rugged approach is part of the appeal. A 4×4 or high-clearance car is advisable for the dirt road; alternatively the beach is reachable on foot from the main road with a 10–15 minute walk.
Why It Stands Out
Very few beaches this close to a port offer this level of solitude and naturalness. On weekdays outside August, it is perfectly possible to arrive at Xyla and find the beach entirely empty. The water quality is excellent — the absence of any development means no runoff. For anyone who has always wanted a Greek beach to themselves, Xyla often delivers exactly that.
The western aspect also makes Xyla one of the island’s better beaches for watching the sun set over the Aegean.
Practical Tips
- Bring all supplies — water, food, sun protection — as there are no facilities
- A 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the access track
- On foot from the main road, allow 10–15 minutes each way
- Best in shoulder season (May–June, September–October) when fewer people visit
- The access track is shared with Pisses area — a good combined trip
