Karthaia-Poles Beaches
Two beaches separated by the hill of Ancient Karthaia, accessible only by footpath or boat. Their combination of clear water, archaeological setting and complete absence of facilities makes them the most distinctive beach experience on the island.
The Beaches
The Poles area holds two separate beaches — one on either side of the promontory that carries Ancient Karthaia. Both have clear water with sand and pebbles; neither is organized. The location beside the archaeological site and the church of Panagia ton Polo gives them a character no facilities beach can match. The silence, the ruins above and the sea below create one of the more memorable days possible on Kea — but it requires planning.
Access
Karthaia-Poles is accessible by footpath or by boat. There is no road to the beach. The main walking route from Ioulida (Route Aristeos, approximately 11.85 km) is Kea’s longest official path — a serious half-day walk requiring proper footwear, water, food and an early start to avoid midday heat. Shorter approach paths (Routes 5, 6 and 7) exist from different starting points, ranging from approximately 1.7 to 3.15 km, and are more practical for travelers arriving by car at the nearest trailhead. By boat, access is available from Korissia or Koundouros in season — check current operators locally.
What to Bring
- Sufficient water — there is no supply at the beach or archaeological site
- Food for the full day
- Sun protection — the site is exposed
- Proper footwear for the path, not sandals
- Start early if walking — avoid the midday heat on the longer routes
Combining Beach and Archaeology
Plan to spend time at the Ancient Karthaia site on the same visit. The temples of Apollo and Athena, the ancient theatre and the fortifications are directly above the beach. For anyone walking the Aristeos route from Ioulida, the beach becomes the reward at the end of a long cultural and landscape walk.
