Scenic coastal view of Kea (Tzia), Greece

Getting Around Kea

Kea is a small island, but a hilly and spread-out one. How you get around shapes how much of it you’ll actually see.

By Car

A car is the most flexible way to see Kea, and the only practical way to reach several beaches and rural areas at your own pace, including Pisses, Koundouros, Spathi and the approach roads toward Kato Meria and Ancient Karthaia. You can bring a vehicle on the ferry from Lavrio or hire one on arrival in Korissia. Roads on Kea are generally good on the main routes and narrower on the way to remoter beaches; a few stretches to beaches such as Xyla and Sykamia involve unpaved sections.

By Bus

The Municipality of Kea operates a seasonal bus network connecting Korissia, Ioulida and several beaches, with a reduced schedule outside the main summer months. Routes and timetables change by season, so check the current schedule with the municipality or locally on arrival rather than relying on a fixed timetable here.

By Taxi

Taxis operate on Kea and can be booked by phone, particularly useful for transfers between the port and Ioulida, or to beaches without bus service. As with bus times, confirm current taxi contact numbers locally or via the municipality, since these can change.

On Foot

Ioulida itself is car-free at its centre and best explored on foot. Korissia and Vourkari are connected by a pleasant coastal walk of a couple of kilometres. Beyond the main villages, Kea’s signed path network — 12 routes covering around 81 km — connects villages, beaches and archaeological sites for travelers willing to walk rather than drive. See our hiking guide for route details.

Distances at a Glance

Approximate driving distances from Ioulida, the island’s centre and capital:

  • Korissia (port): around 6 km
  • Vourkari: around 7–8 km
  • Otzias: around 10 km
  • Pisses: around 12 km
  • Koundouros: around 16 km
  • Spathi: around 13–14 km, partly unpaved

These figures are approximate and intended for trip planning rather than precise navigation — actual driving time depends on road conditions and route.
