Koundouros — Windmills and Southwest Coast

Koundouros is one of Kea’s most developed tourist areas, set on the southwestern coast with restored stone windmills, an organized beach, a popular boat anchorage and the separate water-sports bay of Koundouraki nearby. The ancient name of this area was Nirissos.

The Village

Koundouros sits about 16 km from Ioulida and is the most resort-like settlement on Kea, with hotels, villas, restaurants, accommodation of various grades and a concentration of beach facilities. The restored windmills are a distinctive landmark — now inhabited rather than working, they give the area an identity not found elsewhere on the island.

Koundouros Beach

The main beach at Koundouros is organized, sandy and well-served with facilities. It is one of the more cosmopolitan beaches on the island and a popular anchorage for sailing boats and motor yachts. The bay is protected from northerly winds, which makes it calmer in peak meltemi conditions than some of Kea’s northern and eastern beaches. Blue Flag status should be verified annually — check the current Blue Flag Greece list before using this as a deciding factor in booking.

Koundouraki and Water Sports

Just along from the main beach, Koundouraki is a smaller and more focused water-sports bay, with sand, thin pebbles and a seasonal operator offering activities including windsurfing and other watersports. Verify current operators and available activities before planning around specific facilities.

Nearby Beaches

The Koundouros area has several additional small beaches within a short drive or walk: Frea (pebbles, trees, a few kiosks); Lygia (small pebble bay); and Kampi (about 3 km further south by asphalt road). Each offers a quieter alternative if the main beach is busy.

Kato Meria and the Karthaia Approach

From the Koundouros area, the road continues inland toward Kato Meria, the rural interior of southern Kea and the gateway to the walking routes toward Ancient Karthaia. Travelers basing themselves at Koundouros who also want to explore the archaeological site should factor in a half-day for the Karthaia walk or boat trip.
