Koundouros Beach

Koundouros is Kea’s most developed beach destination, on the sheltered southwestern coast about 16 km from Ioulida. Restored stone windmills, organized facilities and a boat anchorage make it the island’s liveliest beach area — and the base for the separate water-sports beach of Koundouraki nearby.

The Beach

Koundouros beach is sandy, organized and well-served. Sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar and a taverna operate here in season. The restored windmills behind the beach are a distinctive feature — now inhabited rather than working, they give Koundouros its most recognizable visual identity. The bay faces southwest and is generally protected from the meltemi winds that can affect the island’s northern and eastern shores in July and August, making it a more reliably calm option in peak summer.

The beach is popular with sailing and motor yachts, which anchor offshore through the summer. Blue Flag status should be verified annually at the official Blue Flag Greece list before using this as a deciding factor in planning your visit.

Koundouraki — Water Sports Bay

A short walk or drive from the main beach, Koundouraki is smaller and more specifically oriented toward water sports. The beach has fine sand and thin pebbles, with a seasonal operator offering windsurfing and other activities. Verify available sports, operators and opening periods before planning around specific facilities, as these can change between seasons.

Food and Facilities

Koundouros has restaurants and accommodation options both on the coast and in the village behind. It’s the most self-contained resort area on Kea — a good base if beach facilities and easy dining are the priority. As always, verify current business operations before relying on any specific establishment.

Getting There

Koundouros is around 16 km from Ioulida. The road is paved and well-maintained on the main route. A car is the most practical way to reach the area and explore the smaller nearby beaches such as Frea, Lygia and Kampi.

Nearby Beaches

The Koundouros area includes several smaller coves within a short drive or walk: Frea (pebbles and trees, a few minutes south), Lygia (small pebble bay on the road toward Kampi), and Kampi (about 3 km further along the asphalt road). Each offers more solitude than the main beach in peak season.
