Kea Travel Guide

Everything you need to plan a trip to Kea: how to get there, how to get around once you’ve arrived, and when to go.

Kea has no airport. The normal route is by ferry from Lavrio, the port southeast of Athens and Athens International Airport. The crossing is short by Cycladic standards, often around one hour, which makes Kea one of the easiest Greek islands to combine with Athens or use for a weekend break. Ferry times and operators are dynamic — always check current schedules before booking accommodation or transfers.

First-Time Planning Basics

Most travelers reach Kea on a day trip or a short break of two to four nights, but the island has enough villages, beaches and walking routes to fill a week. A car is the single most useful planning decision: many of Kea’s best beaches and the approach to Ancient Karthaia are easiest to reach by road, with the path network as a slower, more rewarding alternative.

Kea is popular with Athenian weekenders, especially from Friday afternoon through Sunday in the summer months. If you can visit midweek, or outside July and August, you’ll find quieter beaches and easier ferry bookings.

FAQ

Does Kea have an airport?

No. Kea is reached by ferry from Lavrio, on the mainland southeast of Athens.

How long is the ferry to Kea?

The crossing from Lavrio is usually around one hour, though this varies by vessel and route — check current timetables before booking.

Can I visit Kea without a car?

Yes for Ioulida, Korissia and Vourkari, which are close together and bus-linked in season. A car or taxi makes the most sense for reaching beaches like Otzias, Koundouros, Pisses and Spathi, and for approaching the rural routes toward Karthaia.
