Hiking in Kea

Walking is one of the best ways to understand Kea. The island has an official network of 12 signed routes with a total length of around 81 km, many stone-paved and following the logic of older roads that once connected the ancient city-states, villages, springs, rural towers and coastal bays.

Why Kea Is Good for Walking

Unlike many Cycladic islands where the landscape is primarily coastal and arid, Kea has a varied interior: oak forest, terraced hillsides, green valleys, ancient springs and a relatively dense network of historic paths. Walking the island’s routes means passing through all of these — and arriving at beaches, archaeological sites and hill villages rather than simply following the perimeter road.

Best First Routes

Route Leon (Ioulida › Lion › Otzias, 5.1 km) is the easiest first walk on the island: a clear path, a memorable landmark and a beach at the end. Route Elixos (Ioulida › Mylopotamos › Korissia, 3.1 km) is shorter and passes the old watermill valley — good for a morning before catching the ferry. For the most ambitious day on Kea, Route Aristeos (Ioulida to Karthaia, 11.85 km) is the island’s complete cultural walk.

Safety Notes

  • Route condition, shade, water availability and signage can change — confirm current conditions locally before long or remote walks
  • Avoid midday heat on exposed routes in July and August; start by 7–8am for longer walks
  • Carry at least 1.5–2 litres of water per person on any route longer than 5 km
  • Wear closed footwear with grip; the stone-paved paths can be slippery when wet or dusty
  • Tell someone your planned route and expected return time on longer or remote walks
