Stone houses and lanes of a Kea village

Where to Stay in Kea

The right base in Kea depends entirely on what you want from the trip. Each area has a distinct character, and choosing well makes a real difference to how the island feels.

Ioulida — Village Character and Walking Access

Staying in Ioulida puts you at the centre of the island’s cultural life: car-free lanes, the Archaeological Museum, the walk to the Lion, and tavernas around the Piazza. You’re around 6 km from the port and a drive or bus ride from most beaches — the trade-off is the most distinctive lodging experience on the island. Options include guesthouses and rooms within the old fabric of the village.

Korissia — Port Convenience

Korissia suits travelers who want easy ferry access, a practical base and a short walk to a beach. It’s the most convenient area for first-time visitors and those with an early morning or late evening crossing. The village is functional rather than atmospheric, but it anchors all the island’s logistics well.

Vourkari — Sailing Harbour and Evening Dining

A small, cosmopolitan choice: a harbour setting, waterfront tavernas, and a location that suits couples and travellers for whom the evening matters as much as the beach day. Vourkari has limited accommodation relative to its dining reputation — book early if you want to stay here rather than commute from Korissia.

Otzias — Beach-First Families

The most practical family base: walk to Kea’s longest sandy beach, tavernas on the shore, and a bus connection to Ioulida and Korissia in season. The village is lower-key than Koundouros but increasingly well-served with accommodation, studios and guesthouses. A good base for a week’s stay combining beach days with the Lion walk and day trips by car.

Koundouros — Resort Facilities and Southwest Beaches

The most developed accommodation zone on the island, with hotels, villas, resort apartments and a beach on the doorstep. Koundouros is the right base for travelers who prioritize facilities, water sports and a self-contained beach holiday — and who don’t mind being further from Ioulida (around 16 km). It’s also the best base for approaching Ancient Karthaia from the south.

Pisses — Budget and Camping

Pisses has a more modest accommodation range, including camping — one of the island’s few options for budget travelers and those who want a western-coast base without the premium of Koundouros. Verify current campsite opening and availability before planning around it.
